JAS Top Ten

The Juried Art Show (JAS, pronounced “jazz”) is an annual exhibition of artwork from the undergraduate students of the University of Guelph’s Studio Art program. Run annually since 1968, JAS is entirely student-run, and is one of the oldest art shows of its kind in Canada. It is a long-cherished tradition of the University, a capstone of community celebration for the school’s emerging artists, and platform for professional development. The Top Ten Show is an exhibit of the ten award-winning artworks selected by the JAS jurors.

This years top ten artworks are by the following artists: Carmen Mattear, Shannon Moroz, Harley Duck, Mei Lein Harrison, Emily Escoffery, Emma Ongman, Genevieve Monk, Hannah West, and Jane Baran.

Layered Imprints

The Artists of the Print IV 2021 class were challenged on so many levels to each create an independent body of work and through the greatest of distance, communicate and collectively bring that work together for this exhibition. We partnered under the most unusual of circumstances, so the multiple layers of our artist voices could speak as one.

Exposure

During a period in history filled with much internal and external disruption, representations of such altered conditions are present throughout Exposure. Exploring themes of distortion, environment, and identity, the Photo IV students have embraced virtual collaboration despite geographical distance.

Lapse

By Hannah Pecyna

In this body of works, I explored my past experiences specifically focusing on moments of lost innocence. A loss of innocence is a common theme in literature in which a protagonist has an experience that leads to a greater awareness of the negative aspects of the world. This is usually shown through one experience. I believe that in the course of each person’s story, there is not just one but many losses of innocence which shape them. During quarantine, I have had a lot of time to reflect and understand which of my life experiences caused me to lose a shred of my innocence and how each experience impacted me greatly. Although it often has a negative connotation, I believe that a loss of innocence is not a negative experience. In the process of making these works, I explored this idea and learned that even in the worst of moments, the experience will help you to learn and grow as an individual. I learned a period of reflection and appreciation regarding the more negative experiences in your life can be essential to self actualization. We are consistently learning and growing as individuals. The lessons we learn are only worth something if we take the time to contemplate and recognize what we are being taught. The aim of these works is to challenge the viewer to reflect on their own experiences where they lost a shred of their innocence. From the acknowledgement of the momentary lapses where our innocence can be diminished, we can begin to heal from those experiences and use them to further understand ourselves, our emotions and how to carry on from our past. I titled this project Lapse because each work focuses on a specific momentary lapse in time in which I lost a fragment of my innocence, for better or for worse. I am interested in further exploring this idea by examining other peoples’ experiences of lost innocence and understanding how they have been shaped by their past.

Screen Time is an installation that consists of three screen-prints of contemporary desktop computers with blank screens. Each serigraph is mirrored by a mobile device on a tripod with an animated GIF that exists within the blank space of the screen-printed screen. Generated by a digital video synthesizer, these GIFs reflect on some of the many ways time can be spent with screens.

Emma Ongman is an interdisciplinary artist interested in questioning structures of reality. She is currently inspired by the evolution of technology and its influence on human behaviour. Her recent work explores mainstream habits of media consumption and the potential of technology beyond its intended use.

To the Moon and Back

Romario Smith

To the moon and back is the expression of the influence of the 90s anime, Sailor Moon, on LGBTQ2IA+ youth. A reclaimed space for the Queer characters and themes that were censored in the English dub when it was brought to North America and an appreciation for the process of creating such animations by spotlighting the typically fast-moving frames.

Transformation and unconditional love are themes that this show very strongly embody and that many people, especially in the Queer community can relate to. We transform ourselves consistently both physically and emotionally to adapt to societal pressures, strengthen relationships and hopefully become some version of our best selves. Explore subject matter that touches upon sexuality, transformation, censorship, religion, accepting spaces, a mother’s love and sacrifice.

This character is one that truly loves unconditional, whether it’s romantic, familial, or platonic and fights for that love till the end. She is an icon that reminds us to love those around us unapologetically or as I prefer to say, to the moon and back.

In support of my upcoming show ‘To the Moon and Back’ I’m collecting donations for Egale Canada. Everyone who donates will receive 2 stickers of paintings in the show. Click here for more information ??
